Rust is simply much harder to deal with because it keeps on beating you to the ground. Rust will often teach you how it feels to spend hours building a base and gathering good loot to simply loose everything overnight while you are offline. And your base won't stay long even on low population servers. you won't get anywhere except if you are highly experienced with the game. You can easily live a nomadic life in SCUM, in Rust, without a base to craft various things on a workbench, unlock blueprints, forge etc. SCUM has a complex metabolism to deal with while in Rust you just need food/water and you are fine. You will have more time to learn the game mechanics, and if you really want to take your time you still have the option to play in single player mode. SCUM however, even on high populated servers (around 80 slots), you might not meet a single player for hours, except if you go where the juicy loot is. I was killed on a servers where only 6 players were online. Even on low population servers it will be harsh. There are Rust servers with hundreds of players and you will definitely die in the first 5 to 15 minutes on your first run. While not comparable since they are both really different and not meant to be played the same way, Rust is definitely the most punishing game.
